Introduce full Internationalized Domain Name (IDN) support in the Eenos DNS Management system, allowing hosting providers, resellers, and end users to create, manage, and maintain DNS zones and records for domain names containing non-ASCII characters.

Internationalized Domain Names allow website owners to use domain names written in their native languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Russian, and other languages supported by Unicode.

This enhancement will make Eenos more accessible to international hosting markets and simplify DNS administration for multilingual websites.

Proposed Features

1. Internationalized Domain Name Support

  • Allow users to enter domain names containing supported Unicode characters.

  • Automatically convert Unicode domain names to their ASCII-compatible Punycode representation using IDNA.

  • Support both Unicode and Punycode formats when creating and managing DNS zones.

  • Display domain names in their readable Unicode format while retaining the ASCII-compatible representation for DNS operations.

2. IDN-Aware DNS Zone Management

  • Create, edit, delete, and validate DNS zones associated with internationalized domain names.

  • Ensure compatibility with the existing Eenos DNS management engine and BIND DNS server.

  • Support IDN domain names across root, reseller, and user control panels.

  • Maintain existing account ownership restrictions and DNS zone permissions.

3. DNS Record Management

  • Support internationalized domain names in applicable DNS record fields.

  • Automatically normalize domain names used in A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, NS, PTR, SRV, CAA, and other supported DNS records.

  • Convert internationalized hostnames to their ASCII-compatible representation before generating DNS zone files.

  • Preserve DNS record functionality and validation for traditional ASCII domain names.

4. Domain Validation and Security

  • Implement IDNA-compatible domain validation, preferably using IDNA2008 with appropriate UTS #46 compatibility processing.

  • Reject invalid Unicode domain names and unsupported characters.

  • Validate hostname labels, overall domain length, and encoding rules.

  • Detect or warn about potentially misleading domain names containing mixed scripts or visually similar characters.

  • Prevent DNS configuration errors resulting from invalid IDN conversions.

5. Unicode and Punycode Display

  • Provide a user-friendly interface displaying both Unicode and Punycode domain names where appropriate.

  • Allow users to search DNS zones using either representation.

  • Ensure consistent conversions throughout DNS zone creation, editing, and record management.

Technical Considerations

The implementation should integrate with the existing Eenos DNS architecture without introducing a separate DNS management engine.

IDN conversion and validation should be handled centrally within the DNS backend to ensure consistent behavior across WAP, RAPP, and UAPP interfaces.

The DNS engine should generate valid ASCII-compatible DNS zone data while allowing users to interact with internationalized domain names through the web interface.

Existing DNS zones, standard domain names, DNS templates, and automated DNS integrations must remain compatible.

Expected Benefits

  • Support domain names in native languages and non-Latin scripts.

  • Improve accessibility for international hosting customers.

  • Simplify DNS management for multilingual websites.

  • Reduce manual Unicode-to-Punycode conversion errors.

  • Expand Eenos compatibility with international domain registration and hosting requirements.

  • Provide a more complete DNS management experience for hosting providers and resellers.
